Feline Identity Awareness

Have you sat your cat down and raised the possibility with them that they are a cat? Some cats may lack insight into their condition, and need to be gently brought to an understanding of it. Other cats may have already had their suspicions, and would appreciate affirmation from you on this point. Follow-up is also very important, as many cats will have further questions, and most will need reinforcement on the main concepts.

...do you have any insight on Step 2, when the cat rejects this suggestion entirely?

Tragically, our feline behavioural mentor has passed away, and has left us with two cats entirely convinced that they are not just humans, but in charge. I suspect they are reinforcing each others delusions.

I discussed this with them, and Chewie has decided he would like to be the Speaker. He believes he is highly qualified by his ability to speak loudly and at length, and will not entertain any possibility that the Speaker's job is not, in fact, Speaking.

Baggins is too shy for public life, but his tail has volunteered as Government Whip.

Calico never really believed that she wasn't a cat. Except perhaps when laying eggs.

That really would be a moment that challenges your species identity.

Perhaps it's more accurate to say that Calico always believed she was a people. Not necessarily a human people, but definitely a people.

Chewie chooses to identify as dog. Possibly as evil dog.

I wonder why humans greet animals so often and reinforce their identities. I assume from the existence of Hello Kitty that it's not just English speakers.

Who is this 'We,' Kemosabe?

(I am so bad at babies and small children. Possibly I need to talk to them like I talk to my cat, but I'm not sure their parents would approve of me calling them 'Fuzzface.')

My (staunchly feminist) sister had her toddler announcing she was a BIG girl now: "Big! Tall! STWONG!" (with accompanying arm muscle flex).

(She got frustrated by how often her daughter was being told what a good, pretty girl she was, so embarked on some counter-conditioning.)

Stage moms are bad enough. I can only begin to imagine how tough a Chambers Mom would be, from Civics in first grade to Mock Trial, especially as my brain tends to cast any part summarized as "Overencouraging Mother" with Ethel Merman, regardless of subject.

...well yes. Parents yelling from the sidelines at a Model UN conference ("Point of personal privilege! I move that the chair stop allowing puns on 'Djibouti' because they are offensive to my darling Evelyn, the delegate from Uzbekistan!") are much funnier than parents who actually Plan Everything.

The year we did the science fair, my parents discussed the Golden Hand award, for the students who seemed to have far less enthusiasm for the event than did their parents.

Lilly still believes she is a bird, but no amount of jumping off the roof has been able to convince her otherwise. Lilly, you cannot fly. You are a cat.
