My sister gave our niece the book Unbored for her eleventh birthday this year. I thought it looked so good that I borrowed it for the library for my own reading. It's an old-fashioned "things to make and do" book with updated ideas as well as the old traditional ideas. I'm not sure why Mark Frauenfelder, who wrote the introduction, says it's the only book of its kind - I like it precisely because it's a juicy new example of the books I loved as a kid.

I only got as far as the introduction, because there was a cypher at the bottom of the page, and well, I'm not made of stone. I fell into the rabbit hole. Half an hour later I emerged, swearing: (solution follows behind cut, along with a very special message for Mark Frauenfelder:

handwritten cypher and solution, amounting to 'you lost the Game' and 'fuck you, Mark Frauenfelder'

It was fucking hard work writing that cypher out neatly enough that I could read my own writing. >:(

This is not going to stop me from dropping a postcard in the mail tomorrow with a cyphered message for Niece.

Antidote for anyone who needs it after that.

The game? THE game? So he just pwned every single reader who's a player? The fiend!!

And yeah, slightly odd marketing, but I suppose that for the generation it's aimed at, even The Dangerous Book for Books/The Glorious Book for Girls is a while ago now, and it was much more self-consciously trying to ape the visual style of the old 50s annuals.

What sort of age group would you say it's geared to? If it'd suit a ten-year-old I'd love to try and find an edition in Dutch for my partner's niece...

EDIT: never mind; I see your niece is eleven - I'm half-slept and reading comprehension is the first thing to go!

Apparently there are references to the Game all the way through the book, so it wasn't just Frauenfelder, it was the authors too.

Yay!!

Note that i have lost my bloody mobile phone, so call my land line OK?

Just so you know, my hair needs to be washed, but I am too tired to move. So it's going to be all greasy and gross. For some dumb psychological reason, I feel less stupid if I tell you beforehand ... I don't know why ... brains are so weird.
