An open letter to more than one person on my flist right now

I will sign your permission slip.

If you need permission from a friend, from society at large, just from anyone, you have it. I will sign the form. You can refer the hall monitors to your friend on the internet with the Batman userpic.

Good for any of the following:

- to eat something not because it's nutritious or you're hungry, but because you feel bad and eating it will make you temporarily feel better
- not to do more than your fair share of the emotional labour in your workplace, home, or social circle. This specifically includes not having to smile or be perky when other people are not expected to.
- not to do more than your fair share of the childcare in your home or family. This includes locking your door if you want to when someone else is meant to be supervising the kids, and you want to be alone.
- to be angry. Generally, specifically, whatever. To express that anger or be silent about it.
- to feel bad. Not to have to apologise for feeling bad.
- to rest when you're feeling tired, even if you didn't get everything done.
- not to have to justify how you spend your downtime. Includes having downtime at all when you are unemployed.

If they ask why I have the authority to sign this permission slip, the answer is BECAUSE FUCK YOU. You can tell them I said that.

Ooh, I'll have one of those, thanks!
(That is a good list. Or not-good, considering that people (esp women) often feel like they do not have permission to do those things. But collating them together and issuing permission slips is good, I think.)

Wonderful post. These two particularly resonate for me:

- to rest when you're feeling tired, even if you didn't get everything done.
- not to have to justify how you spend your downtime. Includes having downtime at all when you are unemployed.

I think it's a big freelancer/worker-from-home thing as well - you don't leave your job behind at the end of the day, so after an unproductive day it's easy to sit and stew about how you should be working all evening, even if you've passed your window of concentration/energy. It's so easy to punish yourself for needing rest/distraction...
